When I first set out to explain to my customers what 3D GPS and machine control technology is and the impact it has on the excavation/site development industry, my oldest son who works with me in this business, said: "Dad, just tell them it's like the difference of being able to use a cell phone or being tied to a land line". WOW!
Imagine your excavating contractor with computers in his equipment. The computer has all of the site design your engineer or architect created for you, roads, driveways, building pads, foundations and site contours. The computer is constantly given blade or bucket location information in real time from GPS receivers embedded on the machine and from a base station.
In relation to the site design, your contractor knows where the machine is located at any given time. By looking at the display on the computer he can see his bucket or blade. He can see the edges of the road or foundation. At any given point, he can see how much he needs to cut or fill, INSTANTLY! No grade stakes, no laborer with a grade rod, no offset stakes. All of this information is in the cab available to the operator at any given time. That is 3D GPS augmentation.
Take it to the next level, add machine control. On dozers and motor graders the operator has the ability to work in manual or automatic mode. In manual, the operator sees the site on the computer display and manually operates the equipment using the information provided. In auto, the computer sends the information to the machine hydraulics and the computer actually controls the blade.
